Every summer, Provence turns into a living postcard — lavender fields stretch endlessly, stone villages glow under the soft sun, and time slows down just enough to breathe it all in. Over the years, I've been lucky to follow so many couples into these dreamy corners of France, capturing love stories that feel timeless yet effortless. Today, I want to take you behind the lens and share my favourite towns in Provence — the ones I return to year after year for the most romantic prewedding & couple photoshoot experiences.
Gordes — A Hilltop Village Carved Into the Sky
Perched dramatically on a hilltop overlooking the Luberon Valley, Gordes is one of the most iconic villages in Provence. With its honey-coloured walls, winding alleys, and dramatic views over the Luberon Valley, Gordes consistently ranks among the top destinations for Provence prewedding photoshoots thanks to its rich textures and natural light.
Why I love Gordes for photoshoots:
The sunrise light here is magical — soft, golden and perfect for quiet, intimate portraits without crowds.
The signature panoramic viewpoint just outside the village offers one of the most breathtaking backdrops in all of Provence.
Its charming alleys and rustic doors are full of character, making every frame unique.
Nearby Abbaye de Sénanque is also a famous landmark that many tourists visit.
📸 Pro tip: I often combine Gordes with nearby Roussillon in a single session for more variety — soft stone tones in the morning, bold earthy reds in the afternoon.
Roussillon — The Red Orange Village
Known for its famous ochre cliffs and terracotta-coloured houses, Roussillon offers an entirely different atmosphere for a Roussillon photoshoot or Provence prewedding session. Its rich, earthy tones contrast beautifully with soft pastels in the sky, making your images pop with warmth and character.
Why Roussillon stands out:
The ochre-coloured streets add depth and richness to your gallery.
Its narrow alleys, stone arches, and rustic windows make every turn photogenic.
Perfect for couples who want something more playful and bold than the neutral stone tones of other Provence villages.
📸 Pro tip: It is close to Gordes (about 15 min drive), and perfect for 2 distinct looks when shooting at different Provencal villages.
Sault — Lavender’s Hidden Paradise
If you’ve been dreaming of lavender photoshoots in Provence but want to avoid the busiest spots, Sault is the perfect choice. Nestled high in the mountains, Sault’s lavender fields are just as stunning as Valensole’s but offer a much quieter, more intimate experience.
Nestled on a higher altitude, the fields here stretch as far as the eye can see, surrounded by rolling hills and quiet villages.
Why Sault is perfect for prewedding shoots:
Endless lavender rows framed by rolling hills.
Less crowded than Valensole, giving us more space to create natural, relaxed images.
Beautiful mountain backdrops for a unique Provence aesthetic.
📸 Pro tip: Lavender in Sault blooms mid to late July, a little later than Valensole. If you’re traveling later in summer, this is the perfect location for your Provence photoshoot.
Valensole — Endless Lavender Fields
When you imagine Provence, the iconic rows of lavender that seem to stretch forever come to your mind first.
Why Valensole is unmissable:
Rows of lavender that seem to stretch forever — perfect for wide, cinematic shots.
Sunrises and sunsets here are unforgettable, with soft pastel skies and saturated purple colours of the lavender fields.
It is the largest area in Provence with plenty of lavender fields, so you're bound to find one.
Sometimes you'll find sunflower fields next to the lavender fields and it gives an interesting view.
📸 Pro tip: Year after year the blossoming time of lavender may change, yet the safest time for blooming Valensole lavender fields is late June to early July. Pair Valensole with nearby Moustiers-Sainte-Marie for a combination of lavender fields and one of Provence’s prettiest stone villages.
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie — A Provencal village hidden next to a waterfall
Tucked at the foot of limestone cliffs, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is one of Provence’s most picturesque and unique villages. Famous for its pastel-coloured houses, cascading waterfalls, and the golden star suspended high between the cliffs, this charming town offers a mix of romantic village streets and breathtaking natural backdrops.
Why Moustiers is perfect for your Provence photoshoot:
Beautiful rustic alleys, pastel-coloured storefronts and stone houses with wall plants.
Cascading waterfall in the middle of the town, quite a unique sight.
Famous for ceramics, and some storefronts show these beautiful handicrafts at the entrance as well.
Close to the Verdon Gorge, perfect for combining lavender fields, charming villages, and stunning landscapes in one session.
📸 Pro tip: I love pairing a Moustiers-Sainte-Marie photoshoot with a sunrise session in Valensole’s lavender fields (about 35 min drive). Morning shootings are recommended as the town gets fairly busy later in the day.
